All instances of our present reality will eventually pass, only to exist as representation through memory, artifact, and image. In this state of representation, we have the ability to fully manipulate the truth of a reality. We actively do this as we represent ourselves in photographs, among other formats. Those who live after us will only have these remaining, manipulated, representations, to conceive of us and our state in history. Collectively, we recognize dated and reoccurring tropes and themes within representations of the past, which will create both a further disconnection to that past, as well as create a collective misinterpretation of what the past was really "like".
In “Making History”, I create a repetition of past photographic tropes, all enigmatic and unusual to our present selves. The themes of representation, contextualization, truth, memory, our perception of reality, the creation of meanings, the methods of photographing and archiving, and the mindset of historicizing and analyzing our present, are all addressed here.
